What’s a Terpene?

Terpenes are formed when a compound called Isoprene forms chains to create a more complex molecule which is made to provide plants with a chemical defense mechanism that deters harmful insects. These chains of molecules build up to create a wide range of smells and tastes which is what gives cannabis its distinct smell and taste. Terpenes are a vital part of the cannabis plant because they provide the foundation for even more complex molecules called  cannabinoids which can provide additional healing properties and psychoactive effects. Although terpenes account for a great part of the chemical makeup of the cannabis plant, they can often be found in nature and are actually are quite prevalent in the wild, they can be found in a variety of plants which range from black peppers, oregano and other leafy greens to valencia oranges and lavender.
